While plenty of tips in this article are common in many article, #5 and #6 have made my routines so much better.

On the agenda portion, I'll offer my own tip. :)

Every Saturday, I plan out weekly schedule on a spreadsheet form that I created. I print it out to log the time spent on each exercises each day and see the BPM progress over the weeks. This is a great way to actually quantify your progress and gives you a good dose of motivation to continue.

Having to fill out a form while you practice, also makes you accountable for what you have decided to practice during that week.

yeah, thanks for this guide. very helpful for someone to write out what you already have thought about and put in to practice but to have it all summed up helps very much. cant wait to start practicing my trumpet again now with a solid agenda to follow. more articles like this please.

thanks!!

I had adopted some of these steps already, but this is a great guide. I've played in bands for a long while and had abandoned personal practicing for far too long until 3 months ago. Now, I work on my chops on two instruments - drums (primary - 12+ hours) and guitar (hobby - 5 hours) - every week. With a wife, 40-hour workweek and playing in a band, time management is a huge concern. I've made huge leaps during this time, but forever to go. Step 10 FTW.

@Bertrand: I love piano improv. The best thing is when technique is no longer something you need to be focussed on. That way you can make better progress with little or no hinderance. And it sure is nice to be able to enjoy your own music every once in a while, without struggling to keep the notes just right.

Thanks Joel, this is really good reading, and I'm looking forward to more of similar articles on audiotuts.

Andrew: Some musicians go a lifetime using effective practice techniques without knowing it, and they wonder how they can make so much progress while their peers are left behind. Consider yourself lucky!

Bertrand: Something like that. :)

"This is all about building muscle memory; once your fingers can do something without consulting your brain..."

Heu... you meant without passing through the cortex but even unconscious actions have to pass through sub-cortical center...

I am a pianist and have played since I was 5 years old. I have never analyzed what I do but these fall into my daily routine without even thinking about it.
