Open Mic: Tell Us About the Music Genres You Prefer

What type of music do you like? What are your favorite genres?

Each Tuesday we open our mic to readers and lurkers alike to come out of the woodwork and tell us your thoughts and opinion, your experiences and mistakes, what you love and what you hate. We want to hear from you, and here’s your chance.

What are your favorite music genres? Do you prefer listening to the same genre as you produce, or something totally different?

Do you have a broad taste in music, or prefer listening to specific genres?

Are there any genres you can’t stand to listen to?

There’s so much great music out there! It’s easy to love any well crafted piece of music but I have to lean towards pop, rock, electro, and filmscore.

  2. Mauro Gentile says:

In one side, I love the energy, rhythm and melodies of Psytrance but the profoundness and high skilled performance of Jazz have the same potential to make me feel alive and happy.
Anyway, like Bryan says, great music comes from almost every genre.

  3. Evan C says:

I love all music…but i listen to a lot of House and Trance since that is the genre i produce. Would love to see more tuts focused on these genres.

    Thank u

    Evan C

  4. Ashley says:

I listen to lots of different genres.
I do have a few that are easier to listen to that are on high rotation on my mp3 player while I’m at work, but in the space of a month I went to see Static-X, Sia, Royal Crown Revue, Deadmau5 and Lamb and loved them all.
I try to keep an open mind when listening to any music, but some I just can’t stand, like manufactured pop.

  5. Matiss says:

    ambient, post rock, classical

  6. Neil says:

I like a bunch of different stuff, alt-country/folk, some ‘general’ indie rock, hip-hop (especially of the political variety), some jazz, Indian classical, some semi-modern classical stuff (Stravinsky, Dvorak, etc).

  7. Alex says:

I listen to almost anything, really- from reggae to classical music. Right now I have a special fondness for industrial rock, hip-hop (gansta rap FTW!) and electropop.

  8. Jeddr says:

Anything with solid guitarparts, but with some melody embeded in it!

  9. nino says:

Jazzzzzz… especially John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Kenny Garrett, Jan Garbarek. Is anyone going to guess wich instrument do I play?

  10. Corey Scott says:

Pop music is my favorite right now but I also love anything southern (USA), rock, hip-hop, and techno.

  11. i love metal, jazz and classical music…really a lot^^

  12. Gery.M says:

BLUES, BLUES, BLUES., Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Eric Clapton and so on. :-D

  13. esben lorenzen says:

    hip hop and electronica most…
But generally anything that is well written and produced!

  14. Emile says:

I try to produce techno, minimal techno, minimal house, tech-house, …
essentially usually a 4×4 beat, while trying to make it that funky you just got to move something :)

  15. Tom says:

I listen to most of what everyone else is saying + Smooth Jazz.

  16. Rupert Brown says:

    Drum and Bass
    some jungle
    electronica
some rock – Tool, system of a down
    the very odd dub step
    anything good!

  17. Like most people here, I listen to alot of house and trance. I am really starting to like disco house and lounge house.

  18. TheFryingpan says:

I used to listen to nothing but classic rock in high school, but once I got into college I decided to be more open about music. Then I discovered electronic dance music, and now I’m in love with Progressive House, Tech Trance, and Progressive Trance.

So over the last year I’ve gotten equipment and taught myself to DJ. Now I’ve started to get into production. AudioTuts certainly is making my learning experience a lot more fun!

  19. enrico says:

    tech houseee!!!! minimal!

  20. Tub says:

    Dubstep ftw!!!

  21. Soulcrusher says:

    Classic Rawk
    Oldskool Metal
    Independent HipHop
    Underground Electronic

Pink Floyd, The Beastie Boys and Nine Inch Nails are the Holy Trinity to me. The top ten list starts after these guys cause they don’t go on lists.

I like music that’s a trip, got a funky beat and I can bug out to it. I can’t stand commercial music but I don’t hate great musicians who become commercially successful.

I have such wide variety of styles and tastes that I can move from hip-hop to classical to EBM to classic rack in the same hour!

I like to think I have cultured tastes but others just say i have a short atten….Hey, Look Squirrel!

  22. m4rt3z says:

Disco, House (Hard, Progressive, Disco), Trance (Hard, Progressive, Vocal, Uplifting), Dance, Dance Pop.

This is the genres i listen to most but i appreciate all types/genres of music and im not closed minded and JUST listen to these types of music! lol

  23. Gary Murphy says:

Charlie Parker said there was only two types of music, the stuff that you like and the stuff that you don’t. I’d change that to be the stuff that you like, and the stuff that you yourself would play differently.

  24. Tristan says:

“..great music comes from almost every genre” totally agree, but it’s electronic music that really gets me going and Drum and Bass will always have a special place in my heart.

  25. Siddeffects says:

Love listening to melodic, bouncy tracks and with meaningful vocals. Also, listen to some HIndi songs, lounge and relaxing music. My favorite genres are techno, progressive house, tech house, deep house and chill out. Would love to listen more of chill out/lounge such as this one by IIo – Rapture(Soulside Mix)

  26. cristian says:

    ItaloDisco, EuroDance
