Open Mic: Tell Us About What You Do When You’re Not Making Music

DiggThis

Music production takes lots of time. What do you do when you’re not making music?

Each Tuesday we open our mic to readers and lurkers alike to come out of the woodwork and tell us your thoughts and opinion, your experiences and mistakes, what you love and what you hate. We want to hear from you, and here’s your chance.

Do you have any hobbies and interests outside of music? What do you do to get away from it all?

i’m going to university but studying music, so when i’m not in front of a computer trying to make music i’m in front of a book reading about it.

or in china town looking for the ultimate bonsai.

    • Tristan says:

Dido, except replace “in china town looking for the ultimate bonsai” with “learning Spanish.”

¡Para mí es muy importante hablar más de un idioma!

      • Björgvin says:

Yeah I’m with this guy. sabiendo decir cosas de musica en más que inglés es muy imprtante cuando estés en un estudio en Mexico!

But if I’m not making music, I’m mostly writing about it, studying the internet and small business practices, related to music.

And then applying for music business school. Which reminds me….

    play in a band.
edit video. (it aint enough to be a one-trick pony anymore, eh?)
    teach audio video production.
    cook in a restaurant.
    get paid.
    then pay fucking bills.

cooking (at home) is definitely the leisure activity of choice. besides recreational drugs.

Hi all. I left Huddersfield Uni with a 1st Class Honours degree in Music Technology and won the 2007 creative programming prize for my MAX MSP work . I struggled to get a job at all at a recording studio. I managed to get a job at a design agency as a flash developer (my uni course included flash and director training) and now over 2.5 years later I am still doing it. I still would love to spend my time making music but it is just a hobby :( . I produce Electronica under fluid breaks with a friend (http://soundcloud.com/fluid-breaks) and I have done a few remixes for some small artists. I spend the rest of my free time playing xbox and with my girlfriend (not necessary in that order, lol).

All the best and have a nice day!

I teach a home recording class.
I am currently writing a home recording book.
I work full time as a graphic designer (I studied audio engineering, and ran a small studio for a time before turning my focus to graphic design).
I write occasionally for Audiotuts and a couple of other Envato sites.

Other than that I’m in school part time (fine arts). Trying to get into reactive code-based visuals and audio (flash, processing, MAXMSP) So much to learn!

  14. Josh says:

Well, I when I am not making music, I am writing it. When I am not doing that, I am writing poetry / books and other material. Then when I am not doing the things above I play sports, schooling, and strategy computer games such as chess. Got to keep your mind busy at all times.

When I’m not making music, I look for hot music gears online, more of like an online window shopping that is.

I always think about how I get frustrated when it comes to my music. I think this path is not for me. Rnb is slowly dying. If not, then is still being left-out from the mainstream. Seems like they’re socially lacking behind. So that means end of my music.

  16. Music isn’t what I do most. I make animations and art, and I go to school. But I listen a lot to music, and I really love to sit down and record/create some melodies and beats. I wish I was a professional, but I’m not that good. :)
