Open Mic: Tell Us Where In the World You Are From

Audiotuts has readers from all around the world. Where are you from?

Each Tuesday we open our mic to readers and lurkers alike to come out of the woodwork and tell us your thoughts and opinion, your experiences and mistakes, what you love and what you hate. We want to hear from you, and here’s your chance.

Thanks to everyone who left New Years wishes in the comments over the last week. Many of the comments had an international flavor – we seem to have readers from everywhere!

What part of the world do you come from? Were you born there, or did you move? Why?

Is there anything interesting about the music where you come from? Are there any advantages or disadvantages to producing music in your country?

It will be interesting to see how wide and far-reaching our Audiotuts family is.

    Hi!
    I’m from Santiago, Chile.
I like how music has expanded in my country in the recent years. I’m a musician too and I love this website, it gives me some ideas and creativity ;)

    Thanks Audiotuts!

Hi Adrian, Jon from Guitar Noize here. Happy New Year from downunder! Yes I am based in Sydney Australia but originally from Wolverhampton in England. I came to Australia on holiday in 2002 and couldn’t bear to part with the sunny shores, I met my now wife and haven’t looked back since!

  5. Barry Wood says:

I live in San Clemente, California just down the road from Anaheim where the NAMM show is going to be in about a week and a half :)

One of the cool things about the ‘net is that my mastering clients are scattered all over the world so it really wouldn’t matter where I lived. It would just make it more difficult to get to NAMM.

  6. Addamz says:

I’m from Hungary, still living in Matranovak and Miskolc.
In this country almost everyone’s family have some musical roots. Musical taste is quite vivid. I think some disadvantages are the high price of gears compared to US or West Europe, and the fact that in Hungary you barely could sell a CD or two, pirated downloads (for personal use of course) are general.

But we have a great advantage against others: We are Hungarians.
I feel this balanced all disadvantages.

    Hi from São Paulo, Brazil!

I’m originally from Rio de Janeiro, but i’m moving to Toronto in march. Why? Because Brazil is a nice place to visit, but not so much to live in. Period.

Most people talk about how amazing brazilian music is, but believe me, whatever you think is great it’s the exact opposite of what most people currently like to listen. Sorry to disappoint you.

I think Audiotuts is nice as it is. Really, just keep up the good work. :-)

    Romania here.

Addamz’ comment a few rows up pretty much sums it for my country also: the prices are astronomical compared to US (and the pay checks are much, much lower), on computers also, not only on gear. The only piece of gear I found at a slightly better price than in US are Yamaha HS80m monitors, and I intend on buying those.

Buying applications? There are a few players out there (like Ableton or Spectrasonics) that I’d really like to buy their stuff and support them, but I need gear (that I would go to jail for stealing…) to use with their products in the first place. So yeah, everybody, except the real big businesses use pirated stuff I guess. At least the gear I bought had a Lite Ableton version, so it feels a little better.

The music industry here is very much based on very shallow music, with no message, and the introduction a few years ago of the local MTV worsened things even more. On my days, youth used to listen to rock, metal, grunge, alternative, indie, punk etc. (much of it from the outside bands), now they listen to a constellation of local idiots/idiotesses who can’t sing a word, but look sexy with a mic, and “manele” a turkish/gypsy/local party music that is the ugliest thing that happened to music, ever. Please search Youtube for manele… you will be appalled. Of course, the producers are in the shadows, and satisfy the mental numbness of our youth with tracks that are all the same, all from cheesy preseted synths and brutally vocoded voices.

Do not come to Romania (only in visit, it’s beautiful here, if you have money even more). Search Youtube for our “manele” music and wonder at what has the human being become.

Wish you only the best in the new year, Audiotuts+.

      I could feel your situation!
I’m still using a 6 years old computer with some of those plugins what i got when I bought my Audio Interface. I think ableton, emu and maudio are quite strong here. I’ve got an ableton lite edition, but honestly I only used it about 2-3 times, because I’m cubase user. Fortunately there are student discounts available. For the gear question… I need to work years to buy something useful, but in fact I have got a very powerful mic preamp from a friend which was used by radio stations 60! years ago. Still working well.
In my country there is a well known quote “We are using what we have”

What the local “Who would be the next star” shows doing is just shame i think.

ps: try to by an apple in hungary, or anywhere in central europe… that’s what called high price.

      • pista says:

Work hard and try hard, no matter where you live, 3 years ago I had nothing, then I bought some laptop made a remix for one band, won a contest and bought myself ableton and an apple. I know it sounds ridiculous but it’s not tools what makes your music and production good it’s in your hands, heart and mind. Also creativity is more appreciated than gear.

Keep it up, my fingers crossed.

I live in Slovakia few miles on the north ;)

    Central Florida here.

Moved down from Mass., don’t remember why the parents did it but overall I dislike the state but I love the Electronic Music scene.

In the 90s it was full of Florida Breaks but now it’s moving toward this Miami Bass, Minimal and even some Psytrance now.

The DJ scene is really tight knit here, after a few parties around here you’ve pretty much have run into most of the promoters and DJs which is great because you show up and everyone knows you.

It’s also great to learn because so many people are open and want to see more DJs on the scene.

I`d love to join the community with some Musical Impressions from me. I crreated some tracks with gargeband an my plans for 2010 is to get better and more seriuos in ableton live. Right now the program hasn`t offer me his magic. I`d love to see more tutorials of this program here. But i´m really satisfied with the offering from here. Thanks for all of your Entries Tips and Tricks.

Hey, Happy New Year from London.

I think Rupert’s comment a few comments up sums London up quite nicely.

You can find pretty much any scene your after, although it’d always be nice if there were more opportunities for bands starting out, to be able to play venues without having to pay because, unsurprisingly, they don’t have the fans yet. Although there probably is, just haven’t come across them yet!

Wicked site, cheers to the writers.

  35. Franco says:

    Ciao everyone,

I’m from Palermo, Italy [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palermo] -making music since the early 90s.

Despite of what most people may think, Italy has more to show than its grisly premier or the honest Bocelli. There are several fine artists and a nice indie scene spanning several genres, but in the vast majority of cases it’s not easy to reach out to the public interest and eventually try to make a living.

I can still remember when me and my band started and had to take not less than 20 people to the clubs, each buying drinks or meals, in order to play :) and today the things aren’t far from then, with X-Factor emulators performing much more covers than daring some own stuff.

Here the internet has generally spread the passion, but music remains a cool hobbyism of sort..at least if you don’t become a product. Instruments are always and increasingly more expensive than US or UK -even on line, and the gig circus relies upon the north and the middle of the country.

Locally, the main tradition is opera, with the 3rd largest theatre of Europe; there’s some jazz culture, but it’s very self-referential and barely surviving. Luckily, kids still love to make new music themselves (hip-hop in first row) but there are few spaces to play and nothing such a Zodiak Free Arts Lab.

While radio networks sound more and more the same, there was even a counter-proposal by the major of Milan to ensure a 50% of Italian songs airplay! Italo dance is pretty much alive, but electronic-based/related productions, in particular, still suffer from an overall press provincialism.

I mostly play synthetizers, and my DAW environment is Logic, so thank you a lot for all of your articles and contributors, and especially thanks for giving the opportunity to tell about us and feel ourselves part of the family… Happy 2010 to all!

    Happy New Year!

I born in Lithuania, so i live here to this day.
But i want to move to California when i will have a chance :)
Because in Lithuania its shity climate, shity economics and shity music.. unfortunately..

  37. I’m also from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. And people also don’t use legal software here. At all. I feel like an alien to have spent some bucks on legal versions of Sonar and FL Studio.

    But that’s life… :)

  39. Johnson says:

    Hey Guys! Happy New Year!

I’m from Singapore, the country with only two seasons: sunny and rainy. Cried and sang my first words here~!

I guess being a musician in Singapore has pros and cons. Pros being having access to lots of exotic instruments (my mom owns a Chinese guzheng and my neighbours include a Malay family who practice on they Malay drums often).

Cons being… land is so expensive that most of us here in Singapore live in apartments and I have to fight for aural space whenever I need to record. Once I had to bring my work to my friend’s house for 1 month due to my neighbour renovating!

  40. Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

  41. Adrian Lo says:

Also from Singapore. Nice portfolio Johnson.

Music industry in Singapore is mainly based on Mandarin pop songs but it’s expanding to include film scoring in the coming years.

  42. Ryan says:

Hattiesburg, MS. I play guitar, bass, drums and vox and put all my stuff through Ableton Live 8 or Audacity. There’s not much of a music scene here so I’m just trying to get the best experience I can doing jams with different folks. Just trying to live the dream ya know. I love all the Tuts sites cause I do photography and graphic design too. Great work guys.
