What Do You Want? We Don’t Know Until You Tell Us!
Sep 2nd in General by Joel Falconer
It can be pretty difficult to tell what you guys want to see here on AUDIOTUTS, whether we're talking about tutorials themselves, or new features for the site.
Today, we're giving you a way to tell us. We're hoping that you guys will use this opportunity to let us know what you want, because it's a subject that matters to us just as much as it matters to you.
Joel Falconer is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and frontman. While Joel's first love is writing and performing songs that touch on important and personal issues, programming, engineering and producing music in the studio are also strong passions.
Sure; the comment section has been there all along. But it's nearly impossible for us to remember which ideas were left in which comment threads and come back to them. It's nearly impossible to gauge user interest, too: was it just one commenter who was interested in that idea, or a whole bunch? Surely we can't always publish a tutorial when only one user is interested in the topic.
This worked to some extent when a tutorial writer happened to read a comment that inspired them to write, or when the comments were centralized in our Suggest a Tutorial post. But at the end of the day, our means of finding out what you want and how many of you want it hasn't been the best.
That's why across all the TUTS sites, we're introducing UserVoice pages that'll allow you to tell us what you want. You can leave us your ideas, and you can vote for ideas that other people have submitted. Don't underestimate the vote: if your idea is already listed, please vote for it. Otherwise we don't know what the user interest level is like and it simply might not get turned into a tutorial or a feature.
But be sure that we will listen to what you have to say. Our goal, first and foremost, is to give you audio and music tutorials that you find useful.
You can access our two UserVoice pages at the following links, depending on your idea:
You don't need to be registered to leave an idea.

Hi guys, just to remind: if you use the links provided to submit ideas, you’ll have a much better chance of us gauging interest and publishing relevant tutorials.

I think that a series of program tutorials from the basics to the pro…. will be the best choise…. progs like sonar, reason, fl, logic, audition and more….

I submitted my idea, but I’m posting it here also XD
Video+audio tuts. Tutorials on how to get the best audio from a camera, with/without a mic, where to set the mic up, and the whole sha-bang.
I might record a meeting for the local history room, and want to make it good.
thanks.

GarageBand tuts !!!

One thing that’s a bit of a pet peeve for me are all the tutorials for Logic, which is only available for the Mac. With the highest estimates putting Mac use at only 16% of the market, it would be nice if tutorials posted could focus on programs available for other platforms – ideally multiple platforms. If a tutorial is written for Logic, then the writer could at least make some attempt to generalize, or to frame the information in such a way as to make it useful for people who are using other software.

I’d like to see a really in-depth tutorial on Reason’s Redrum covering all the basics, tips and tricks, using it with midi sequencers, and how to customize and tweak it.
I think you guys are doing a great job and I enjoy checking out articles featuring products I don’t even own. Its good to see what’s out there and what they are capable so keep up the good work.

I have been enjoying the tutorials that demonstrate real world examples (i.e. how to recreate a sound/song or creating specific patches for a certain sound)
would love to see a tut for recording bass direct. I can’t seem to get a heavy, pronounced bass guitar sound in my recordings.

Id just like to echo the first comment, more on compression within single elements to sub mixes to mastering compression. Layering kicks and EQ im fairly comfortable with but might still learn a thing or two.
Thanks for all the tutorials so far and i will continue you to come here and read these fine tutorials!

Personally I find tuts about how to achieve a certain sound or effect very interesting, for instance; in computer music magazine they often feature tuts on how to sound like a certain band or a specific song, it is interesting to see the practices and methods used by different producers. I have to admit that I don’t get as much enjoyment from articles about musicians or songs.

In response to Bob Grove….. While Macs may only constitute 16% of the market, the audio industry is DOMINATED by Mac users.

I would like to see some in-depth tutorials on basic Reason tools.
( )I would also like to see different ways to make instruments in Reason sound more realistic/commercially sounding.

I wrote this up yesterday and posted it in make suggestion but I’m copy and pasting here.
Hey Guys
first up nice work on this site looks nice, simple and its informative.
I agree with Shiny Box about some synth tuts but instead of the run of the mill look this is a oscillator this is a filter approach,
maybe some thats more like
( )create a mysterious the matrix style scene transition In Sound Design by W. Brent Latta
So programing a Synth with a clear goal
And I think you should focus on free synths that are mac/pc available so all could follow through
Even though I use Logic 8

More Cubase tutorials instead of Logic. Also more dance related tutorials would be nice! Keep it up!

Hi,
I enjoy seeing all of the tuts on how to use specific apps to manipulate sounds. I’m specifically interested in how to create soundscapes that manipulate and mix acoustic and electronic sources, though I don’t have much experience with the electronic media.
Please, please, please: lose these current web roundups. They are not informative or interesting.
The web roundups on other sites like PSTUTS feature other great tutorials or art made using similarly creative techniques.
I’d really like to see the work of small independent artists featured in a web roundup rather than “5 Music Badasses Who’ve Lost Their Way.” That seems better suited for a site about pop starts rather than sound design and production.
Thanks for the opportunity to put my 2 cents in.

garageband !!

Mike – that is becoming less and less true in all areas, and besides, I think that my point is an important one. It would be great if tutorials specific to certain software spoke in terms general enough that people could transfer the information to their own setup. This would benefit ALL users, regardless of platform.

how to record a funky guitar loop.
( )Universal Indie Records September 16th
I create mostly sample based hip hop and r&b using Reason much like an SP1200 and Garageband for vocals and then send my work out to mastering for a bigger better sound. I’m interested in tutorials much like the “Game” and “Soulja Boy” ones.. and anything to do with Reason and Garageband. I like to see a tutorial on creating the T-Pain effect without using Autotunes but by tweaking your software programs built in effects.
But I read it all… anything and everything whether it’s my genre of music or not… so just keep em coming…

Some things I’d like to see…
GarageBand
( )EQ’ing individual tracks
EQ’ing at the master track level
Mastering
Recording processes (Lay down a click track, record drums, then guitar, etc.)
Recording background vocals
ひむら November 1st
HARDWARE
How can I set up my TC Electronics D-two rack unit to my Mbox interface using Logic 8.
( )Which way would be the best rout to take to keep the best sound integrity?

I’d like to see tutorials on techno or something like that rather than hip-hop.

post questions with sound samples from big dominant producers, to get everybody here to recompile this samples…
( )lets say this heavy grizzly synth from this neuro break track…post a little sample of that sound and lets see if we can reanimate this sound…i’ll be fun…and educational too proving that we know somethings beside the generic t-pan and bunch of compression and limiters tutorials…
