Workshop #27: Love Medicine by Anders Link

At Audiotuts+ we irregularly put up a reader track for workshopping and critique (find out how to submit a track). This is how it works: you upload your song, and every week or so we’ll publish one here and step away from the podium. The floor is yours to talk about the track and how the artist can fix problems in and improve upon the mix and the song.

Thanks for your submissions everyone – and keep them coming. We have enough to publish two or three a week at the moment. Let me know if it gets too much.

This track has been submitted for your friendly, constructive criticism. They have put their track (and their heart and soul) in your hands to learn and get useful feedback.

  • Do you enjoy the song or track itself? Does it have potential?
  • Can the arrangement be improved?
  • How did you find the mix? What would you do differently?
  • What do you enjoy about the rhythm track? What can be done to improve it?
  • Is the choice of instruments relevant and effective for the style/song?
  • Are the lyrics (if any) effective? Does the style, arrangement and genre of the song suit them?
  • Can you suggest any specific techniques that might improve the track?
  • Do you have any other constructive feedback?

Description of the track:

This track was done in ’08. I was trying to design a dance song that had a sense of space and aethereality. Inspiration pulls from some french electronic artists and aphex twin’s “window licker”. It was done with logic and various soft synths. My initial qualm is with the vocals not being full and decisive enough, but I really enjoy certain parts.

  1. I like it, definitely catchy. I feel like the synths after the break, around 2:40, could be a lot fatter and granier, but that’s just my opinion. The drum machine roll at 1:28 also sounded a little awkward…

Really good stuff though! I’d dance to it.

not bad, but IMO it would be better serve with a 21st century drum sound. the “80′s” sound is overrated and overused. but a nice effort.

  3. Anders Link says:

Yeah it could definitely do more after 2:40… I mean I was trying to break it down but really I could do a lot more there. Graininess is probably a good start.

Thanks for the point about the drum roll too – definitely missed that.

This is a year back and I really programmed most of the material in my songs minus the guitar and vocals. Now I’m using a lot more acoustic/live elements.
I still like the quality that programmed electronic drums have, but they have lost the character that they first had within the mix of this song. I think I might just have too much going on at times – or have it mixed incorrectly.

    Anyways thanks for the comments.
