Write a Quick Tip and Make $50

Write a Quick Tip and Make $50

We don’t have a Quick Tip to bring you today, but you can help make sure we have plenty of Quick Tips in the future, and make US$50 if yours is published!

A Quick Tip is a mini-tutorial of around 500 words, or a screencast of under 5 minutes in length. In general it would only cover one main point or technique.

If you’re new to screencasts, you might like to check out Screenr, which is perfect for Quick Tips since it only allows for video less than 5 minutes in length, and is easy to get started with.

When you’re ready to submit your Quick Tip, head over to our Submit a Tutorial page. Make sure you clearly mark your submission “Quick Tip”.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you!

Where and in what format should I send the Video files?

Hi Juda. Please zip them with any other files you are sending (a brief typed introduction would be great), and send it using the form linked to at the bottom of the Submit a Tutorial page.

If your file is too big to send that way, feel free to use a service like Yousendit, and send me an email with the link.

Any format is fine at the moment – though I’d prefer not to get wmv files.

        Got It Thanks!

Submitted a tutorial, It’s for keeping control of Abletons Library.

However it has 2 applications I created specially for the tutorial. They are only Automator scripts, but are they OK to use?

Also could I make a suggestion, that when tutorials are not accepted they could just be given a denied email reply? Just as reassurance that you’ve got it, I know I’ve submitted tutorials more than once because I hadn’t heard back for months. What is the turnaround for tutorials at the moment, and are quick tips any different?

      Hi L1

Thanks for submitting, and for your questions. The review process is long and laborious, and I understand that once you submit a tutorial you can feel left in the dark. As a writer I empathise with the desire for immediate feedback – unfortunately in the publishing business you don’t always get it! This seems to be a good time to shed some light on the process, and how the process will change in the very near future.

I appreciate every tutorial that is submitted, but we receive a lot more than we’re able to publish. Until recently I’ve only been reviewing the list every couple of months. I sort them out in into lists of tuts that I can’t use, will use, and might use. The “might use” list is for tuts that I’d like to publish, but don’t have room in the schedule or budget for. But if I get an opportunity (like a tut I was expecting doesn’t comes through), then I can publish it.

Generally people in the “can’t use” list will get an email as soon as I’ve reviewed them. These are tuts that are about topics we can’t cover, topics that have been already covered recently, and tuts that don’t meet our standards. For the people in the “will use” list, I’ll often send an email once I’ve reviewed the tut, and always once it is published. The people in the “might use” list are often left in the dark a bit longer. I’m hopeful that I might be able to use them, so don’t want to send a rejection email, but I also don’t want to get their hopes up either.

But that’s all changing! Starting this month (April 2010).

We have started publishing significantly more community-submitted tutorials. This is happening for three reasons:

      1. We are publishing more material each week.
      2. One of our regular writers is no longer able to write for us.
      3. We’ve started publishing Quick Tips – hopefully three a week.

That means I’ll now be reviewing the submitted tutorials at least weekly. Our list of submissions is still long, so it may still take a few months to hear back from us, but that will continue to improve as the weeks go by. And because Quick Tips are a new option, they will be processed quicker – there are less in the queue.

I hope that clears things up a bit. Again, thanks to everyone who has submitted a tutorial to Audiotuts – and thanks for your patience!

      Adrian

Cool, clears things up a lot.

Also what are the rules if I was to do a sampling tutorial, like sampling an old record? Would it be a out of the question because of copyright and all that?
