Audiotuts+ Quiz: Sampling Terminology

“Although we are not necessarily digital audio engineers, some basic background information on what exactly bit depth and sample rate are is good information for anyone who is involved in digital music.” How well do you know the sampling terminology of digital audio?

Answers to this quiz can be found in Will Walker’s recent article All You’ll Ever Need to Know About Samples and Bits.

    This one was easy! XD

Sorry folks, I’d have to disagree and say Question #1 is incorrect. Bit depth doesn’t describe amplitude at all. It describes quantization. 16 bits = 2^16 quantization levels. I can have a 16 bit signal and a 24 bit signal with the exact same amplitude. I can have a really quiet (low amplitude) 16 bit signal, and a really loud 8 bit signal. Amplitude is not directly related to Bit depth. Bit depth does however relate to signal to noise ratio (really SQNR — there’s quantization again), but that’s not at all the same thing as amplitude. Other than that, fun little quiz!

Hi Schwartzsound. Thanks for your comment. You’re right – “amplitude” isn’t a sufficient description of bit depth. “Amplitude resolution”, or your suggestion “amplitude quantization” are better. Please change your score card to 100% ;)
