Audiotuts+ Quiz: Synth Terminology – Hard

There’s a lot of terminology and parameters you need to be familiar with when using synthesizers. How familiar are you? Test yourself with this more difficult quiz!

    That was hard?! :P

I found the wording the most difficult, but 100%! :D

  • Jeremiah

The question about a hollow sounding waveform was kind of ambiguous, as both triangle and square waveforms have only odd harmonics.

You’re right, Jeremiah. I’d forgotten about that. I was thinking of a square wave, but the triangle should have also been marked correct.

  • Grippo

I only missed one. But the one I missed was the question about hollow sounding waveform (I answered triangle) which like Jeremiah said is kind of ambiguous. I’d love to get some harder tests though.

    100% :D
That proves that we can learn a lot of things here :D

I find a few problems with your quiz, for instance, additive synthesis doesn’t need to use sine waves per say, a filter such as a peak or comb or all pass do not subtract from the harmonics… a physical model can also use subtraction and doesn’t need to follow a formula so much as it emulates teh processes and properties found int eh pysical world (for example the KS uses a feedback system and not any more of an equations than a blip oscillator or bi-quad filter or any distortion based or additive synthesis would)… blah blah

    Dear Audiotuts+,

When a total noob is able to get 90% with ease, it shouldn’t be called a “hard” quiz.

    Love,
    A WINNER
