Workshop #100: Antibling by Horns & The Badge

Workshop #100: Antibling by Horns & The Badge

At Audiotuts+ we regularly put up a reader track for workshopping and critique (find out how to submit a track). This is how it works: you upload your song, and every week or so we’ll publish one here and step away from the podium. The floor is yours to talk about the track and how the artist can fix problems in and improve upon the mix and the song.

This track has been submitted for your friendly, constructive criticism. They have put their track (and their heart and soul) in your hands to learn and get useful feedback.

  • Do you enjoy the song or track itself? Does it have potential?
  • Can the arrangement be improved?
  • How did you find the mix? What would you do differently?
  • What do you enjoy about the rhythm track? What can be done to improve it?
  • Is the choice of instruments relevant and effective for the style/song?
  • Are the lyrics (if any) effective? Does the style, arrangement and genre of the song suit them?
  • Can you suggest any specific techniques that might improve the track?
  • Do you have any other constructive feedback?

Description of the track:

One of the better songs off our last album, it’s a song about what’s wrong with mainstream hip hop. As we are currently in the process of planning and writing for our upcoming album, I’d like to make sure we’re focusing on fixing the right things. Any criticism is welcome, we have tough skin!

At first, the beat sounded a bit too simple. However, the more it played, it got catchier and catchier. It’s very Neptunes-esque (which is a good thing, in my opinion). As for the flow, you absolutely killed it. You’re a talented cat. The vocals sounded great, but almost a little bit too loud. I’d recommend trying to “mix” the vocals with the beat a tad more. Either way, you really did your thing. It’s too bad you had to make this song at all, but I suppose “the bling” is what record execs want. All in all, I’d say 7-8 out of 10. Nicely done.

ouch… ok, it is a good rap song, most could say this I bet, your mc skills are dope solid, no question… but damn, the beat… your song is about anti bling and anti mainstream… this “Neptunes-esque” sounds more like dirty south to me… If you make a track with the statement about whats wrong with mainstream hip hop, then it wouldn’t hurt to make a dope underground beat for it, you could sample vinyls like back in the days.. or if you want it to be more musically correct you could do something like The Roots or so…
right now Ill just go this far that, mix is nice, vocals are good and the mc is doing a great job… but the instrumental is just plain boring and weak..some thing bleeping, I mean you don’t even have a decent bass-line…that isn’t hip hop, sorry.
of course this is pretty much a matter of taste, but I think that my statements make sense due to the fact of what this song speaks of.
