Workshop #105: Fight the Fight by Dark Disco Club

Workshop #105: Fight the Fight by Dark Disco Club

At Audiotuts+ we regularly put up a reader track for workshopping and critique (find out how to submit a track). This is how it works: you upload your song, and every week or so we’ll publish one here and step away from the podium. The floor is yours to talk about the track and how the artist can fix problems in and improve upon the mix and the song.

This track has been submitted for your friendly, constructive criticism. They have put their track (and their heart and soul) in your hands to learn and get useful feedback.

  • Do you enjoy the song or track itself? Does it have potential?
  • Can the arrangement be improved?
  • How did you find the mix? What would you do differently?
  • What do you enjoy about the rhythm track? What can be done to improve it?
  • Is the choice of instruments relevant and effective for the style/song?
  • Are the lyrics (if any) effective? Does the style, arrangement and genre of the song suit them?
  • Can you suggest any specific techniques that might improve the track?
  • Do you have any other constructive feedback?

Reminds me of Faith No More ‘King for a Day…’

The drums sound programmed, and the room effect on them is disconnecting the drums from the other instruments. The guitars sound like software plugs, there’s a bite to them.

The mix becomes better towards the end of the song, but the room reverb on the drums is still disconnecting the drums from the guitars/vocals.

The drums are live, aside from the obvious “electronic” bits in the bridge section of the song. The only reverb on them might be a slight touch on the overhead mics. Other than that it’s the natural sound of the room.

The guitars are also live, recorded with a Knappenberger Dead Room 1×12 Guitar Isolation Cabinet.

How far away from the drums did you have the microphones if that reverb is the room effect?

I’m not exactly sure, I’d been experimenting with different configurations. I had:

        - inside kick
        - Yamaha Subkick
        - top snare
        - bottom snare
        - 2 OH’s in XY position above the kit
        - one room mic, set farther back

The reverb I applied was just on the OH’s, and was pretty minimal I think. Maybe it was too much. Also, there was no gating used on the drum mics, they were all left 100% open.

I liked your mix, man. Reminds me of some awesome 90s metal/industrial music! Cheers!

Pretty cool. Not my taste, but the mix sounds good to me. Dark, yet transparent.

    Metal here ? ^^

    At last :)

    I like it :P
