Workshop #108: Rain in the Canyon by Oakensong

At Audiotuts+ we regularly put up a reader track for workshopping and critique (find out how to submit a track). This is how it works: you upload your song, and every week or so we’ll publish one here and step away from the podium. The floor is yours to talk about the track and how the artist can fix problems in and improve upon the mix and the song.

This track has been submitted for your friendly, constructive criticism. They have put their track (and their heart and soul) in your hands to learn and get useful feedback.

  • Do you enjoy the song or track itself? Does it have potential?
  • Can the arrangement be improved?
  • How did you find the mix? What would you do differently?
  • What do you enjoy about the rhythm track? What can be done to improve it?
  • Is the choice of instruments relevant and effective for the style/song?
  • Are the lyrics (if any) effective? Does the style, arrangement and genre of the song suit them?
  • Can you suggest any specific techniques that might improve the track?
  • Do you have any other constructive feedback?

Description of the track:

“Rain in the Canyon” is the first track on my CD Flutecore, which combines Native American flutes with lots of software synthesizers. The flute part to this track has no particular melody, and has probably half a dozen different delays on it.

I’m not an artist, I’m a consumer so take my comments as you will.
The track starts off stong, the driving base pulls you in and sets the tone for something. Unfortunately i dont feel the something ever really arrives. i think the flute use is creative but the lack of specific melody makes the track hard to listen to at times. Meanwhile that bass is still there, i kept waiting for some variation in it. I think the quality is impressive and work that must have gone into it is admirable but I expected the sounds to take me somewhere, to deliver a message or even just tease me iand i dont feel i ever really got that.

This is a style in which I have virtually no listening let alone working experience. That said, you’re getting some cool sounds here. The flute paired with the relentless drum beat makes me think of a tribal ceremony with a heavy dose of hallucinogens. The only thing that detracts for me is the shaker sound. It’s panned real hard and doesn’t change through the whole track. Try automating the panning (or flanging, or phasing, or EQing…) for a little variation.

Makes me think of Jean-Michel Jarre. Nice, although it starts to get a bit monotonous after a while.

I agree with the previous comments, although it would work really well in a Half Life style game, but it would be really awesome if it built up and some really wicked drum beat broke out and went nuts.
