Drum Compression: Get Your Attack and Release Times Correct

Drum Compression: Get Your Attack and Release Times Correct

Compression can be a tricky one to get your head around, and even if you’ve got your head around the threshold and ratio settings without the attack and release times being set correctly it will always be difficult to get the desired effect. This quick tip will outline a really handy trick I learned from a friend a few years ago which allows you to get your attack and release times just right. It’s primarily designed to work on drums but the same principles will apply to any percussive sound.

We will cover everything from basic structure to different voicings of the chords and try to apply them in a creative context. If you want to suspend your old chords for a little while then read on!

How to Process Loops Using Multiple Tracks

How to Process Loops Using Multiple Tracks

Using loops in productions is great but sometimes they can become a little static in nature. You can perform cuts, edits and even use automation to spice things up but occasionally I like to spread the loops across multiple tracks to make things more interesting.

Quick Tip: Some Unusual and Creative Uses for LFOs

Quick Tip: Some Unusual and Creative Uses for LFOs

We’ve all heard (and possibly overheard) the classic LFO>Filter Frequency used in extensively in Dubstep, but LFOs can be used in many other creative ways. This quick tip will give you some ideas about how you can create interesting effects by applying LFOs to some other parameters on your synths/samplers. Most of the sounds in this tip have a slight 80s feel to them, but the techniques can be used in all musical styles.

Ableton Live 12 O’Clock EQ Issue FIX

Ableton Live 12 O’Clock EQ Issue FIX

I’ve been DJing with Ableton for a long time, a good few years, and love it. The one thing that always annoyed me was the fact that the EQ Three plugin, supposedly designed for easy DJing and Live Performance, provided one completely out of touch feature – the Gain controls for the 3 bands didn’t set themselves at Unity Gain (0Db) in the ’12 O’Clock’ position.

But I have discovered a fix. Watch the following little screencast I’ve made to demonstrate how to get around this little but significant bug.

Quick Tip: 30′s Vinyl Effect

Quick Tip: 30′s Vinyl Effect

In this age of modern techniques some want to go back decades and want to achieve that old 30′s vinyl and radio sound. Nowadays it’s quite hard to achieve the sound of a real vinyl record but using some effects that every DAW has we can come real close to that sound. In this Quick Tip we’re going to use Ableton Live, but almost every single DAW has the effects we need (Vinyl Distortion, Filters, Bitcrusher).

Novation Launchpad MIDI Feedback Part 1: Simple Clip Feedback and Devices

Today we’ll begin a series of quick tips about Novation Launchpad “MIDI feedback”. This first tip will explain you how to make a simple “feedback” patch, and in the next tips we’ll cover more interesting material. So, let’s begin.

How to Recreate Lil’ Wayne’s Lollipop in Reason 4

Twice a month we revisit some of our reader favorite posts from throughout the history of Audiotuts+. This tutorial was first published in November 2008.

In 2008, perhaps no song has dominated the charts more than Lil’ Wayne’s Lollipop. Produced by Jim Jonsin, Lollipop is a prime example of how a hit song does not have to be complex; instead, it is a perfect blend of simplicity and catchiness.

Quick Tip: Use Patcher as a Send in FL Studio

Quick Tip: Use Patcher as a Send in FL Studio

FL Studio’s mixer has four dedicated send tracks as well as the ability to use any other track as a send. This is fine for most purposes, but forces you to burn a track if you want to process a signal separate from the regular (i.e., not sent) audio before routing it to a send. With Patcher, you can process and send audio without using up any extra mixer tracks.
