I see. So the master fader should be left at 0db and the rest turned down (and up) but keeeping the master at 0. I was turning down the master in the end also when my master output exceeded the -3 preferred standard. Is it wrong to turn the master down in this way even if most of the faders in the mixer remained below the master fader?

I use pro tools and am a little confused as to the 'right' volume level to mixdown tracks. Would i be correct in thinking that once you have your mix, you should bounce it to disk and then import it back into pro tools and boost the volume of this 'master' track to the point that is isnt peaking?

had to add that this is great information and i hope mo continues to rock more of these tut's. definitely the best site i've come across and wish i came across it a helluva lot sooner.

mo... you have a wicked knack for making things seem obvious. thank you. maybe we can twist your arm to get into a little more intermediate | advanced techniques (altho.. i suppose a lot of it is individual creativity)

@ davidm (altho not sure if you'd even be looking at these comments this late in the game...and please this is no attack so take with a grain of salt)

i'd have to disagree with your "caution." i think most people are taking mo's advice too literally in regards to right's and wrong's and black and white. (he didn't say to edit audio during mixing.. look at his other articles that focus on this - plus... when he says mix.. im quite certain he's not talking about the traditional mixing phase) i'm not saying you are making these specific mistakes, but stereo sound stage is HUUUGE (for current electronic music production) and i do believe this should be done at the mixing stage prior to mastering (many electronic musicians, including myself, have had to "learn" to "master" ourselves, sagely.

i'm quite certain mo could go into lengthy discussion on many of his brief points (sometimes, i wish he would since this is all spot on and took me a long time to learn myself) but the idea was reiterating what was said earlier - music is about dynamics and movement.. if everything is center.. nothing is moving... and thus becomes background noise.

that said... (after prolly too lengthy of a post) i'm not expert.. and assuming neither are you or anyone that responds, considering we wouldn't be searching for techniques to better our own skills.
