A Basic Guide to Mixing and Mastering

Mixing and mastering are the two base components of professional producing. Do you have a home studio and do you want to record your own instruments, such as the guitar, the piano and the drums to make an awesome track? This article provides all the knowledge considering mixing and mastering that you’ll need to produce your very own track!


Why is Good Mixing and Mastering Essential

First of all, let’s start by explaining what exactly mixing and mastering is. The first term, mixing, refers to the process of putting multiple layers of audio together to make one final track, or to musically modify an existing track. The second term, mastering, refers to the process of optimizing the final track using all sorts of different mastering elements such as compression, equalization, stereo enhancement and more.

In this article, we’ll spend quite a bit more time on the mastering as we will discuss several mastering processes like compression and EQ. Now, let’s take as example me having recorded a track in my home studio. I’ve recorded the guitar, the piano and the drums using my digital condenser USB microphone onto different tracks in my sequencer software Cubase.

As I simply layer the tracks and play the song, the sound is quite undynamic and flat. What I can now do, is mixing. I can change the volume of an audio track at a certain point to make e.g. the guitar come out more clearly at a specific moment. This is the mixing of the track, the layering of the audio and the volume determination. Also, unwanted noise and clicks are removed in the mixing stage.

Now, the track will sound better but there’s still quite a lot of work to do. It’s time for mastering. By mastering the track one can really bring a track to life and spice up the sound. You can make the drum more dynamic, the guitar more or less sharp sounding, the piano more soft and you might want to boost the bass frequencies of the piano a little bit as there is no bass.

This is an example of mastering, which one does to spice up the track and make it sound way more dynamic. Below, you can here an example of a track that I’ve recorded. The first audio file is a raw recording, the only thing that I’ve done is layering the instruments. The second audio file is that same track, but now mastered. Compression, equalization, stereo enhancement and reverb effects are applied. You can certainly here the difference as the second track sounds quite different.

Compression and Compression Techniques

Most of you probably already know what compression is. Most of you, though, are also probably not using it correctly. The compression of the dynamic range of audio is a common thing and it is using on pretty much every modern audio track. What compression does, is making sure that the audio doesn’t clip: it makes sure that the audio doesn’t exceed the decibel limits so it makes sure that the audio simply won’t be too loud.

Now, this is how it works: when recorded audio is too loud and exceeds the decibel limits the compressor takes the peaks of the audio and compresses them so that they will stay within the limits and therefore won’t be to loud. However, it also takes the very soft part of a track and boosts the frequencies. Eventually, you’ve got a track with an average waveform and the soft parts are being boosted and the loud parts are being reduced in frequency and therefore in volume.

The problem with compression is that these days a lot of people really don’t know how to work with it. When one simply puts a compressor on a track then everything will stay within the volume decibel limits. However, it also really flattens the audio and takes away the soul and dynamics of the music.

When one plays a really emotional piece of the guitar, for example, and then on the end a louder part, then the compressor will make the first part louder to make everything have a common average decibel level. This takes away the emotion in the sound and therefore one should reduce the compression. In modern music, a lot of albums are very loud and undynamic: this is called the Loudness War. These days, it seems that most people are trying to put as much decibels within the dynamic range as they can. This will often result in an unemotional, undynamic track.

There are different kinds of compressors available, both physical and virtual compressors. Virtual compressors are getting more and more popular these days because they are more flexible and don’t require physical space in a studio. Also, they are more dynamic to work with because they are faster. Different compressors have different timbres, characteristic musical sounds. Examples of famous compressors are the VC 76 FET compressor that produces a punchy sound, and the VC 2A Electro-optical compressor that produces a very smooth and warm sound. Compressor choice is personal, and fortunately there are a lot of compressors available these days for different purposes.

Now that you know a little bit about compression, let’s take a look at some compression techniques. In fact, there is a session right here on Audiotuts+ about compression techniques here. This is an incredible handy session as it provides a lot of different techniques on how to efficiently add compression to your track. Also, be sure to find as many resources as you can considering compression to get as much experience possible like (e-)books and other websites.


Equalization

Equalization is the boosting of specific frequencies of a sound. Two examples of EQ interfaces in Cubase are:

In the first image you can boost a specific frequency using a slider. In the second image you’ve got a visual representation of all the frequencies. Now, EQ is very easy to understand. When you’ve recorded a track with e.g. a bass drum, you don’t want it to sound thin and you want it to have relatively more bass frequencies in it. With EQ you can boost the bass frequencies, for a bass drum often between 100 and 300 Hz, so that you can get the sound that you want. EQ allows you to get the perfect sound that you want for an instrument and often in recordings all the instruments are being equalized.

Below, you can here two audio files: the first one is a guitar and then a drum without EQ, the second audio file is the same but then with EQ. Notice the difference and that the second track sounds more vivid and warm.

As I said, EQ is quite easy to understand but hard to apply. For most instruments there are a zillion kind of sounds that you can create using EQ. However, you should consider two things. One: does my sound fits within the timbre, the characteristic sound, of the instrument? And two: does my sound fits within the track? Now, there aren’t any rules for proper equalization, and you’ve just got to judge the sound by ear.

Additional Effects

Aside from the two most important things, compression and equalization, there are more effects that can help you spicing up your track and get the most out of the sound. Below are some effects that will help you getting started.

Stereo Enhancement

Stereo enhancement is quite simple. Normally, music or sound is being played trough two or more speakers. Most computer speakers and all headphones have to speakers: stereo. The stereo enhancer will simply distribute the sound over the two speakers so that there won’t be coming any more sound from one side. This gives the track a natural effect as people have two ears.

There are also stereo enhancers that allow enhancement for 5.1 surround sound. You can play with different settings such as the width, delay and color.

Reverb

Reverb is basically echo. When you apply reverb to an audio track, an echo will be generated. This results in a more realistic sound. Especially mockups made with virtual instruments extensively make use of reverb, as virtual instruments often sound quite dry.

However, also on live recorded tracks reverb can be applied. This will give the track a more warm and natural feeling but again, just as most of the other things that we’ve discussed in this article, you really need to know how to work with reverb and make sure that you don’t apply too much. Also, different instruments need different reverb times.

Additional Additional Effects

Now I won’t be talking about all the additional effects right now because there are a LOT. Basic ones are denoisers, amplifiers (usually for guitars), tuners and more. Just go through you’re software’s effect list and you’ll see that there are a lot of effects to spice up your track.


Conclusion: Mastering the Mix

Finally I want to talk about the essence of mixing and mastering. It is just like composition, instrumentation and notation a special subject of producing music. Just like composing and notating music mixing and mastering requires intensive knowledge and experience.

Although a track may sound good right from the beginning after layering the elements, a lot of people make the mistake of not making any improvements from then. Really, there are so much improvements that you can make with effects like compression, EQ, reverb and additional effects. Just be sure not to produce the track until you’ve got the ultimate sound that you want.

    In each of the audio examples, listening to the processed and “mastered” examples makes me enjoy listening to the unprocessed sounds a lot more. I don’t understand how mastering it makes it sound more dynamic when dynamics of music should come through the playing of the instruments and structure of the song.

    The first audio example sounds great and then when you listen to the mastered version, it sounds like something is missing and what’s replaced the missing piece is a bunch of hiss.

    I thought the idea of mixing was to eliminate problems, what you have in the first example is really well recorded and balanced to begin with. The idea comes across a little better with the EQ section since the first audio example sounds a little muddy, but still pretty good, but then the EQ on the second track seems to go too far with the EQ, I’m not sure if that was on purpose or not. I think the audio samples should work with what you’re saying to highlight why good mixing and mastering is a good idea, but at the moment it seems a little incongruous to say it’s a good idea and then have audio samples to back it up that aren’t that great. And by that, I don’t mean about the playing. What’s been played is nice and upbeat and pleasant to listen to, it’s just that when the EQ and compression is put on it, the raw energy of the music seems to die.

    Whilst it’s fine to improve things that need improving, it’s not a great idea to say you must EQ and compress everything. A common theme I find among musicians is that they’re never happy with what they do and this just exacerbates this problem somewhat. A lot of the time something that we’re not entirely happy with, other people will genuinely enjoy listening to! By all means fix things that sound bad and if someone says it doesn’t sound great, it’s probably a good indication, but it also works at the other end of the scale where something could be really awesome but you might be driven to effect and alter constantly and never finish because of this imaginary idea that something is missing.

    All that being said, it doesn’t make it any easier given what a subjective nature music has. :3

      Hi, I do agree with you about the sound examples as the second examples have a more studio like sound. However, I don’t agree with your statement that it’s not a great idea to EQ and compress everything. In fact, many producers (and I) do never produce a mix without compression! Also, EQing gives you more control over a sound but if you like a sound as it is, then it’s fine! I’m saying, though, that many people are lazy or forget to EQ certain things while EQing a small thing like a snare drum or whatever might effect the mix in a good way. And you are right about the EQ being too extreme, just for demonstration purposes.

      Anyway, it’s nice that you shared your comment so thanks for that :)

    Nah, that has to me a mistake on their part. I highly doubt they think that’s what a good mix/master sounds like.

    I’m sorry, but this is a very disappointing post. First off, this is in no way a “complete guide” to mastering. It is an article touching on the two common tools for post-recording processioning. But the mastering process also involves choosing what kind of EQ to use, whether it be a particular hardware unit or plugin (and maybe different units for different frequency bands!) – same for compression.

    and, more importantly, about the A-B audio examples, the first one actually sounds pretty good the way it is, but the second one sounds so over-processed in the wrong way. It sounds like a huge mid-scoop, then compressed hard, deepening the mid-scoop, then maybe its the stereo-image expansion that is phasing out the far left and right. it is dull, awkwardly EQ’d in no way warm, and sounds like someone played the original track through an intercom with a fork through it – musically speaking.

    i did a quick little rip of the original track and tried to master it myself, and i found all it needed was a little 8k boost, 3k boost to bring out the snare, bandpassed 2k-5k and ran that through some mellow reverb, then a very light 3band compressor.worked for me.

    music is very subjective indeed. and maybe its the coffee kicking in, but a beginner’s tendency is to over process and fall victim to ear-fatigue, each of which were evident in these ‘mastered’ versions.

      You can’t just rip a file and then find the ”perfect” frequencies. As you said, EQ’ing completely depends on what type of sound you want. I kinda agree with your comment but the part in which you ripped the original file and said how it SHOULD be done is not a good statement.

    Thanks for your comments, guys. I wasn’t expecting quite that response! I found Hugo’s article a good overview for beginners.

    One problem may be one of expectation – that title promises a lot! The tut is marked with the difficulty “beginner”, but I just tagged it as Basix to give the thumbnail a little “b” to hopefully make it more obvious that it is for beginners.

    Audio examples demonstrate what something sounds like, and though it isn’t ideal, authors often have to use what they have on hand. Writing a tut is a time-consuming process!

    Mastering is a complex and subjective process. It’s great to get different perspectives. Many of your comments add real value to this tut, and will benefit our readers. Thanks!

    This should have been called ‘A Basic Guide To Mixing & Mastering’, as a simple overview it works quite well.

    In response to an earlier post, I don’t think EQ should only be used to eliminate problems, it is one of many tools to use and can help create more of an effect as well. It all comes down to personal preference, and the style of music you produce. All aspects of audio production are creative in many respects, and there is definitely no one rule to approach it.

    And as far as compression goes, the producer John Tejada reckons he hardly feels any need for compression on electronic instrument channels, as they are less dynamic than live instruments. I am of course, paraphrasing. I personally agree though.

    I would personally like to know more about mixing and layering multiple instuments, as I find it is the hardest part of producing a song. I am currently recording a two guitar one bass song at home and the mixing is a headache for me.
