Exactly what an up-comming producer requires, many thanks on my behalf - I now don't have to (or drastically reduce) the endless trips to my car, just to listen to my song with the sub in my boot to hear the frequencies haha!

remember some monitors have different settings in the back for frequencies. I have mackies and had them set to only play back 60 hz and above for over a year. thank god i looked back there again.

@ Stephen... your dead right, i made the mistake of writing this assuming that people were working in a treated environment but im sure a lot of readers aren't and of course this is key to making the right decisions when it comes to the your low end mix....

I think there is a whole tutorial in this to be honest... it's something i have already mentioned to Joel so we shall see but.... i have just completed a tut on mix translation which covers this fairly well and will work nicely with this tut... it is completed and should be up very soon.

@Vaughn ... yep there are a few different chassis available but in my experience the Magma was always the one of choice for hardcore UAD1 users, thi sis only from reading and seeing them in other studios etc, but if there is a cheaper more compatible version then id suggest you go for it ;) you can find lots of info on success full magma chassis set ups on the UAD forum ... if you havn't already been give it a go, very helpful in general.

Pretty serious stuff Mo! UAD actually had a test article featuring a few of the PCI chassis setups. Magma however, didn't get great marks due to internal issues. The others tested well so, it's a big step up, but to be able to use my UAD stuff again its worth the extra effort. Well, it looks like I may have to take a hammer to my trust piggy bank! Thanks again for the help and tut' advice.

I think there is one more thing that warrants mentioning in this article, and that is the listening environment.

It is futile to try to manage and mix your sub bass anywhere but a professional studio or mastering room that has been acoustically designed and treated for a flat frequency response. In a home studio or untreated room there will be room nodes where low frequency (large wavelength) reflections reinforce one another at certain points and cancel each other out at others. This means that in one spot in the room a certain range of sub bass frequencies may sound really loud, but move to another, and they maybe be very quiet.

If you decide to get a subwoofer, room placement is key. Research and experiment with the placement in your room. Know your listening environment!

@ Ray / Chris... Headphones are really not ideal for monitoring full stop and where they really fall down is sub bass. Although you may be able to hear the sub frequencies they will not be accurate I'm afraid. These frequencies need to develop within a space (a treated one preferably) to be perceived correctly. You will also come across imaging issues monitoring on phones... this can result in mixes that sound great on headphones but that play back on monitors with excessive bass and strange pan settings.

I am doing a tutorial on mix translation soon that will cover monitoring with headphones to some extent....

... and apologies for the mistakes. maybe Joel can tweak those ;)

@ Ari... Yep 60hz is very low and your right anything below around 80hz and arguably higher is what's called omnidirectional, so you cannot tell which direction its coming from. A lot of subs now have a hard wired high pass / crossover at 80hz which is a little more sensible, but ideally it's nice to have a user definable high pass.

@ Vaughn... There is a way you can use your PCI card with your iMac but it aint cheap! a PCI chassis, such as a Magma chassis is needed, this will contain your PCI cards and is connected via USB or Firewire. You can often pick them up on ebay but make sure your sitting down when you check the price.... bar that im afraid its a case of using the UAD Xpander with a laptop or switching back to desktop to get the full use of the UAD plug-ins.

Hope all this helps guys.

Technical question concerning your UAD plug-ins. I used the UAD card for my PC, but recently converted to an iMac. Is there a way to still use the PCI card with the Mac to continue using the UAD plug-ins? I dislike not being able to use them as they are awesome for standard mixing and mastering... Any suggestions? Keep up the great work!

My Event Tria system is a 2.1 configuration with a sub that's set to crossover at unusually low 60 Hz. Apparently they chose to set it there because below that, our ears can't locate the sound, making it easy to place the sub wherever. It's hard to come by since it's been discontinued for many years now, but it can be had for well below $500 on eBay. An affordable entry point for those of us who care about low end.
