Morphing in Pro Tools

Morphing in Pro Tools

Tutorial Details
  • Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Time: 10 minutes
  • Requirements: Pro Tools

We’ve all seen how you can morph one face into another in the graphical world. In this screencast Rishabh Rajan shows us how to achieve the same thing with audio using Pro Tools.

Morphing is a concept well known to users of Native Instruments’ now out of production synth, ‘Kore 2′ as well as Reaktor and FM8. Its where one sound seamlessly transforms into another. I have discovered a way to do the same using plugin automation in Pro Tools.

Normally this would be quite tedious with automating multiple parameters but there is a not too well known feature in Pro Tools called ‘Glide Automation’ which can be used to create this morphing effect really quick and on any plugin that can be automated.

Now THIS is a tutorial. Great job.

I take it back… tried this in PT10, couldn’t find the preference you indicated or the glide in any of the menus. Thinking it’s a version difference and the feature must be there somewhere I consulted the very handy manual – which says the glide feature is only available in HD or with the complete production toolkit.

The tutorial is done on PT 9. I haven’t tried out PT 10 yet but I don’t think they would remove an option in a newer version. This option is available in PT 9 and HD. So it should be available in PT 10 HD & non-HD. Unless you are using the stripped-down version of Pro Tools called PT Express. That one might not have these options.

I just checked the Digi website and it is a feature that is only available in the Complete Production Toolkit both on PT 9 and 10 and in the HD version.
        Sorry about that.

This is very cool. Does it work with instruments as well

It will work with any plugin that has parameters that can be automated.
