Another awesome one from Mo Volans! I think I started using this technique after reading another one of your articles, and watching some producer tuts, and I use it on all my DnB tracks. I love it.

One thing I do a bit differently is I very gradually high-pass filter the highly compressed track. I then add a bit of reverb on the compressed track to make the drums sound a bit bigger. This way the bass of the kick is not getting any reverb, but the attack is. Also, this lets you process your kick separately from the higher-end stuff. It’s a bit more complicated, but I’ve been happy with the results.

Your tuts are always spot-on. Thanks!

Nice tut, and not a bad idea ghost. I have been leaving the kick out of the parallel process, and just compressing it alone, for that very reason. Even the tiniest verb, which I rather like a touch on my other drums, is obvious on a kick and unpleasing to the ear. I will give your method a try
