Quick Tip: How To Use Reaper’s “ReaComp” Compressor Plugin

Tutorial Details
  • Requirements: REAPER
  • Time: 10 minutes
  • Difficulty: Beginner

ReaComp is REAPER’s compression effect. In this quick tip Ken Theriot uses ReaComp on a vocal track and demonstrates how to make the most of it.

    Thanks for the Tut.
I think you need to explain the “ratio” parameter, even in a few words like you did with attack/release.

    • Ken Theriot

      Hi Lee,

Ratio means the 1 dB output above the threshold for every X number of dB of input above the threshold. It’s easier to understand this way. A ratio of 4:1 means that for every 4 dB of input after the threshold has been reached, the output will only be 1 dB over the threshold. The signal gets “turned down” by that percentage. If the gain reaches 8 dB input above the threshold, the output will only be 2 dB over the threshold (with a 4:1 ratio), etc. The higher the first number, the more the signal gets reduced over the threshold, and vice versa. That’s why a 1:1 ratio meant that no compression was happening because for every 1 dB input over the threshold 1dB is being output – 1 in, 1 out, so nothing being “turned down” over the threshold. I hope that helps!

        Thanks!

So basically, a compressor can act as a limiter if you set the ratio to ∞:1 and use the threshold controller to set the limit?

      • Ken Theriot

        Yup. Pretty much:).

MANY THANKS FOR THAT SIMPLE BUT EFFICIENT TUTORIAL.

The video must have changed because I’m seeing a vid on single cycle editing.

Hi Kristopher. That’s really strange – we recently posted a video on single cycle sampling. But I’m still seeing the ReaComp video embedded above. Something strange may have happened to your browser. Here’s the direct link to the correct YouTube video.
