Quick Tip: Use Multiple Audio Interfaces on Mac OS X

Quick Tip: Use Multiple Audio Interfaces on Mac OS X

Tutorial Details
  • Difficulty: Beginner/Intermediate
  • Time: 10 minutes
  • Requirements: A Mac, audio interfaces

This is a true gem for Mac users especially when most DAWs do not allow you to use multiple audio interfaces. This can be very useful if you have multiple audio interfaces and want to use them together for more simultaneous inputs and outputs. I am sorry about this tutorial will only apply to Macs so Windows users are out of luck.

This concept works by creating an aggregate device. If you have more than one audio device, you can use them as a single device known as an “aggregate device”. With this aggregate device, you can increase your audio inputs and outputs without purchasing another multichannel audio interface. If you have a 4-channel interface and a 2-channel interface. You can combine them to use them as a single 6-channel audio interface. This is exceptionally useful as most software only allows you to select one audio interface at a time.

Step 1: Open Audio MIDI Setup

You can find this under Applications – Ultilities – Audio MIDI Setup. This is the application used in Mac OS X to configure your audio and MIDI devices. This is not the same as the audio preference pane under system preferences. You should see a window similar to the one shown below.

Step 2: Create An Aggregate Device

Create a new aggregate device by clicking on the “plus” symbol at the bottom left corner of the window. This creates a new device where you can map the devices that you would like to use together. You will see a new device created as “Aggregate Device” which you can rename to something which makes sense to you.

Step 3: Select The Audio Devices

Select the aggregate device and you will see all your available audio devices that you can use to form the aggregate device on the right. Just check the checkbox that says “use” to add the device. Once you have selected the devices you wish to use, you will need to choose a device which is the clock source or the master. Select it from the drop down menu. If your devices support word clock, connect them together to provide sync. If the devices do not support word clock, tick the checkbox labelled “resample” for the respective devices except your clock source. In my example below, I have selected my Mbox Mini and my built-in output. Since my Mbox would be a more reliable clock source, I have selected it as the clock source and ticked the resample box for my built-in output.

Step 4: Select The Aggregate Device In Your Software

Now that your device has been set up, you will see the new audio device as an option under the list of your audio devices. Go ahead and start up your DAW and open up your audio preferences. You should see your new device with the combined inputs and outputs available for your use. Congratulations! You now have more inputs and outputs at your disposal.

The Difference With Getting Another Audio Interface

Although this methods gets you more simultaneous inputs and outputs, you will need remember that these are different audio interfaces. Different audio interfaces use different convertors, different quality components and most importantly sound different. You can’t hook up 3 different audio interfaces with 2 outputs each and use that for a 5.1 surround system. This will not get your accurate and consistent results as each output is colored differently. Avoid using the inputs and outputs across different audio interfaces for any session that would require “matched” outputs such as surround mixing, stereo pairs, surround recording, etc. Keep these groups of inputs or outputs on the same audio interface.

Tip For Ableton Live Users

If you have only one external audio interface, you can create an aggregate device with the built-in audio interface on your Mac. A nice trick would be to use the built-in output on the MacBook Pro as a preview out for Ableton Live. You can have your external audio interface for the main mix and the built-in interface for the audition path which can be used for auditioning clips, soloing tracks, etc.

Nice tut. I’ve read some similar stuff on linux but they say that since each interface has its own chlock after a while th recording would come out of sinc. Is this true here also?

You should sync the external devices with an external clock if possible. If not check the resample box to have OS X sync the devices. I haven’t come across a situation where the audio is out of sync though.

Been using this for years; Logic wouldn’t let me use my Microphone interface with my Direct Box. Created an aggregate device and BAM! works like a charm :)

  • jason

Nice tip, since you’re using the mBox as a “master”, would ProTools recognize the 4 inputs/outputs? For example 2 inputs from the mBox and the 2 built-in inputs?

-specifically Pro Tools 7 or 8, which is still proprietary to Digidesign hardware

    thanks!

    • http://hector-lee.com Hector Lee

Sadly, I doesn’t seem to be possible. Pro Tools 7/8 looks specifically for Digidesign Hardware and won’t pickup other audio devices/aggregate devices. Would be really nice if it was possible. Although but Pro Tools 9 might work but I haven’t had a chance to try it.

  • Velanche

This is great; thanks for that!

I never knew anything about an “aggregate device” setting. I know this article is about audio interfaces, but I am using Logic Pro 9 with two MIDI interfaces, an M-Audio Keystation Pro 88 and a Tascam FireOne audio/MIDI interface/control surface. They both co-exist fine, except that if I don’t have the Keystation controller plug in via USB to my iMac before launching Logic, the device settings for each parameter on the FireOne changes from “FireOne Control” to “Any.” Annoying, because I have to reset each parameter, which are currently transport settings. I don’t do any other settings on the FireOne unit until I can figure out how to keep my device settings on “FireOne Control” permanently.

I hope to give this a try soon. The only thing that will take a bit of time is that I’ll have to re-enter my MIDI settings once I create the new aggregate device.

    Thanks again!
    V.

    Is this for OS 10.6?
Because I have 10.5.8 and my Audio Midi Setup window is completaly different. I don’t have the option to add more decives.

You can see the window here:

    Thanks

    • Yacko

It’s a bit more roundabout and not as elegant. See menu item Audio -> Open Aggregate Device Editor.

      • Maxx

I am having the same issue. I don’t have the option to add more devices. When I select the plus sign at the bottom right, the aggregator flashes then disappears.

I am running osx 10.6 and I do not see a menu item Audio > Open Aggregate Device Editor.

How do I find the Aggregate Device Editor?

I’m running Studio One free and attempting to use my Blue Mic via Blue Icicle. It registers in my Preferences > Sounds > Input but will not appear anyplace else.

  • Niblet

Handy tut, i never even found this preferences menu till now.

Quick question, is it possible to route the sound from your DAW or anything (e.g Ableton/traktor) to an application like skype? So instead of the person having to listen through your speakers and back into the microphone, the sound of your computer is sent directly to them.

Any help will be appreciated :)

Thanks man! I remember reading up on soundflower when i first had a mac, but it slipped my mind. Works perfectly :)

“Thanks man! I remember reading up on soundflower when i first had a mac, but it slipped my mind. Works perfectly :) ”

—–Niblet raises a great question however: I’m wondering you can do the reverse:)—–

My goal: to run “Skype” output into Ableton Live input…

I’m speculating: assigning Skype as an aggregate and finding it within Ableton’s preferences as an interface…
Therefore feeding output from aggregate into a “line in channel”…

Can this be done? I am a sound engineering and I’m getting picky about how I hear my friends…
IE. I would love to put a compressor with some “live” settings on them.. internal compression/limiting is very harsh and i would like to soften it, also put some reverb on top so they freak out ;)

      Please respond!!! I’m super curious

Hey I have ableton live 8 how do I set it to be used as a preview ?

    • http://hector-lee.com Hector Lee

When you are in clip view, ensure that the in/out section of the tracks are shown. You’ll see a cue out on the master track, thats your preview.

I can’t add a new audio device (or subtract one for that matter). When I click the (+) nothing happens and the (-) is greyed out. I AM the admin for this computer and logged in as such. Any ideas?

    • http://hector-lee.com Hector Lee
      Author

It is normal to not be able to remove a device. The only devices you can remove are the ones that you have added yourself. Its strange though that you are unable to create a device. What version of the OS are you running?

    • Justin

I have the same problem with not being able to add an aggregate device by clicking on the +. It SAYS “add aggregate device”, but then nothing happens. I’m using OS X 10.6.2, on a mobile home directory, as a non-admin user set up through Workgroup Manager. I AM able to add a new device when logged in as a local admin, though… any thoughts?

You’ll need administrative privileges to change most system preferences and this would be one of them. Make the changes as an admin and then you’ll be fine.

    Question…

I have a bose usb wireless speaker as an external. Is it possible to play from both the Bose speaker and the built in computer speakers at the same time?

    • http://hector-lee.com Hector Lee
      Author

If it lists as two separate devices in the audio devices list, it should be possible. Try creating an aggregate device and see if both devices are available.

  • CM

This is pretty cool, but I’m a little unclear about exactly what you have when you create an aggregate device. I’m trying to add a third mono-channel to my two stereo-in channels on my audio interface (I’d like to close mic an instrument and have two mics to capture the room sound in stereo.) The interface is an M-Audio Firewire Solo, and I’m interested in using a Shure X2U to capture a close mic. How are the various inputs (now under “Aggregate device”) identified inside your DAW? Does it depend on the DAW? In Digital Performer, the various inputs seem to be “Aggregate Device 1″ or “Aggregate Device input analog 1″. How do you know which name goes with which device, or do you find out through trial and error?

    • CM

Oh, and how can you make sure that the output from these various devices is going through just ONE device (in my case, back through the Firewire solo, into my mixer, and out to my speakers)? I want to hear playback of my multitrack recording through ONE device.

    • http://hector-lee.com Hector Lee
      Author

Identifying the I/Os does take some trial and error. Naming convention differs from DAW to DAW but some DAWs like Pro Tools will allow you to rename I/O to reference them better (this only applies to within the DAW).

For outputs, just make sure you route your master outs from Digital Performer to the correct set of outputs. I’m not familiar with Digital Performer but it should be your master stereo outs.

    Hi! I like this post.

Question: If im using 2 line6 UX2 devices, is it possible as well? Do you have any videos or links to a video explaining on setting up the aggregate device in Mac? TQ

    • http://hector-lee.com Hector Lee
      Author

You shouldn’t have problems aggregating the devices if they are CoreAudio compatible. It has crossed my mind to make this into a video tutorial but I would need to find some time to get it done.

  • john clark

Maybe you can help me. I am trying to simply get my mac mini with snow leopard to play music from the onboard “headphone” output AND a set of Logitech bluetooth speakers in the next room at the same time. I followed your instructions for creating an aggregate device, but when I try to play through the device it says that the device “has no output controls” and no sound comes out of either device. The devices each work properly individually but not as an aggregate. (The devices, when playing individually, DO have their volumes controlled by the arrow buttons on my keyboard).

    • http://hector-lee.com Hector Lee
      Author

I haven’t used bluetooth speakers before so I’m not sure exactly how do they work. I believe that the device would need to be CoreAudio compliant for it to work properly. Are you trying to use the aggregate device to play music from iTunes? The aggregate device works better for pro audio applications due to being able to route the audio to the correct channels. Playing music in iTunes would only be a stereo output while the aggregate devices has more than 2 channels.

It is known that the volume buttons don’t work for some combinations due to the way the different devices handle volume control.

    • Maxx

How did you get your Aggregate Device to work.
Mine flashes and goes away… :-(

  • Steve

I am trying to get Logic to record multiple devices and although it sets up ok using Agg Device it is giving me issues with drop outs. I am using a MOTU Ultralite (FW), Focusrite Saffire PRO 40 (FW) and an M Audio Transit (USB). I need inputs for a live multitrack recording and am getting it routed from a desk. However I can’t seem to get all of them to record cleanly. It varies in quality from a drop every few seconds to constant clicking depending on what order I add things, what buffer sizes I have in Logic and what latency setting I use in the Saffire Mix Control (which should but isn’t controlling Logic).
I have successfully recorded 24 tracks using 3 MOTUs but I can’t keep borrowing the 2 other MOTUs.
    Any thoughts, Thanks

    • http://hector-lee.com Hector Lee
      Author

I would try to sort things out with just two devices first, the MOTU and the Focusrite. I would swap around the master clock (using the resample checkbox) cause it sounds like a clock issue. A larger buffer size should resolve glitches or else it shouldn’t be related to the buffer at all.

Is it possible to bypass the Saffire Mix Control to test if it is causing sync issues?

Hello I am Josh, I just installed my Fast Track pro and the output green light isnt indicating. I am using Mac OSX Lion 10.7.2 Also my logic pro wont work with the fast track sound output, it will say the previously selected audio interface is not available. the built in audio inputs and outputs of the computer will be used for this session

    • http://hector-lee.com Hector Lee
      Author

If you are using a MacBook or MacBook Pro, make sure you are using the USB port that is further away from the screen (closer to you) as it provides more power. Sounds like a problem with the Fast Track and I would check with the support guys at M-Audio.

  • Nick

Wanted to do this a while ago and forgot the idea all together. Just fixed up the knob on my mbox and stumbled on this.

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH. Nothing like gaining access to a few more inputs.

  • Jonathan

    Hi

Does anyone know how to setup two of the bluetooth logitech “Mini Boombox” while playing simultaneously?

    Thank You

  • Aaron

    Hi,
Would it be possible to set up an aggregate device consisting of hardware, like a USB microphone interface and SoundFlower to route application audio (IE Skype) into Logic? I was using a piece of software called Wiretap Anywhere to do this in Snow Leopard but apparently they can’t get it to work in Lion. I don’t want to upgrade to Lion until I have a known solution. Thanks.

Can anyone tell me how to record sound from music devices to Mac OS X by connecting to Audio interfaces?

I have seen a thread here (http://forums.techarena.in/operating-systems/1454641.htm) explaining about the same but i didn’t get any idea about what actually needed in this config.

    Hello guys.
Would anyone be so kind and help me out about an issue that occurred suddenly on my mac os x 10.6.8?

It worked in charm but now I have problems. Mac won’t use RME as a default sound device, I click on it as a default device but the sound goes thru internal speakers. And mac works very slow in anything about sound.

Do I have to re-install RME driver? or is there a need of a complete mac os format? This is strange. Cubase or Logic work ok with RME but Mac not at all. Thanks, Redon.

  • Tirich

Please help me out!!! Is there a special driver to install for Pro Tools 8 to locate the Mbox 2 mini?

    nice article!

but it is till not working with what i am trying to do…
i want to route whatever comes in from my motu ultralight to the built in digital out of the mac pro.
i tried the aggregate device and also the little program “line-in” to pass the sound through.

  • Matevž

I want to conect two m audio fast track pro devices , whith 4 outputs to get 8 outputs, but my mac 10.6.8, cant see them. Even they are both conected, there is just one in in the audiomidi setup. Any sugeststion? Thanx

  • Callam

Thankyou so much, i could not find how to do this anywhere, you should do a youtube video, thats the first place i looked!!

  • Antonia

Tried it, but it doesnt deem to work, and as a matter of fact i cant get any sound at all from my Mbox2!!!!
When i try to choose it from Audio preferences it says : This device has no selected outputs.
Whats wrong? I lunched pro tools and I can only get sound from the internal speakers of my Mac book.. PLz plz plz fix this… (Pro Tools 10.1, latest version) (mbox firmware version 1.43 , latest there is).

I’m trying to create the Aggregator like in step one but whenever I click the + button, the new aggregator doesn’t appear, I can’t seem to find out why it won’t make the aggregator for me. Any suggestions?

    • http://adriantry.com Adrian Try

Hi Camsy. Does anything at all happen when you click the + button? On Mountain Lion I get a small menu of two items, “Create Aggregate Device” and “Create Multi-Output device”.

  • Lipoune

it doesn’t work with bluetooth devices on snow leopard…

    • J Brad

it doesn’t? So I can’t stream bluetooth and to my Apogee Duet simultaneously?

  • Bobo

This won’t work with Tascam US-144. I suspect it won’t work with any Tascam interfaces. Tascam says they chose sound quality over ability to work with aggregator.
