I can't give too much guidance since I haven't heard the specific sound, but my advice would be to use the subtractor...try checking the bass patches for the subtractor and see if there's anything close.

Typically when I'm trying to recreate a sound, I go through all the available sound libraries looking for what's close, then I tweak it from there. Saves a lot of time figuring out what settings to use.

hey eric,

just wanted to say your articles are the best of read out there on reason. especially the recreate songs articles. so helpful. i am trying to produce a sound in reason and not sure how to describe it but its a synth sound that is common in a lot of hip hop nowadays. you can here it in the chorus in american boy (estelle, kanye) and the chorus in paranoid (kanye) and like you (ciara). its like a buzzy single key bassy synth sound. not very technically described there. haha. can you help at all?? thanks.

Everest,

Aside from ProTools, Reason is the primary production software I use, so all my remakes will be done with that. I have a few more non-remake tutorials that I'm in the process of writing, but I'm hoping to do a new remake or two sometime this month.

Thanks Eric, great tutorial as always. I check AudioTuts 5 times a day; can't get enough. As a studio musician, when it came time for synths, I'd always just arbitrarily turn knobs and hope for a happy accident. This tutorial was great to demistify some of the basics that I missed out on.
