Typically when I'm trying to recreate a sound, I go through all the available sound libraries looking for what's close, then I tweak it from there. Saves a lot of time figuring out what settings to use. I check AudioTuts 5 times a day; can't get enough. As a studio musician, when it came time for synths, I'd always just arbitrarily turn knobs and hope for a happy accident.
